Food brands want to make credible, compliant, evidence-based claims

But navigating nutrition science, the Food Standards Code, and policy expectations is complex - and mistakes are expensive

That gap between what the science says, what regulation allows, and what brands actually do is what led me into nutrition science.

From the beginning, I was less interested in surface-level nutrition advice and more interested in how food information is regulated, interpreted, and applied in practice – particularly in commercial food environments.

That focus now underpins all of my work with food companies.

Dr Courtney Stewart, PhD-qualified nutrition scientist and regulatory consultant specialising in food regulation, health claims and evidence for Australian food brands

From research to real-world solutions

My journey began with a Bachelor of Nutrition Science at Queensland University of Technology, where I gravitated toward subjects that explored food policy, regulation, advertising, and population-level behaviour change.

Alongside my degree, I volunteered with several nutrition organisations, gaining firsthand exposure to how food systems and policy operate beyond theory.

This led me to complete a Biomedical Science Honours degree (First Class Honours), undertake a PhD in public health nutrition and work within Australia’s food industry as a Nutrition Scientist, contributing to research strategy, policy submissions, evidence reviews, and professional education.

Through this pathway, I developed deep expertise in scoping reviews, systematic evidence collation, regulatory interpretation, and translating research into compliant, defensible outputs for industry use – where my work now sits, firmly between research and regulation.

“Courtney (from NPR Consulting) has been a complete pleasure to work with. Her eagerness to learn, adapt and meticulously carry out requirements gives me confidence that she is an asset to any team in delivering impeccable, evidence-based work.”

Nowadays, I support food brands to make confident, evidence-based decisions

Because getting it right early is faster, cheaper, and safer

Hi, I’m Dr Courtney Stewart

A PhD-qualified nutrition scientist and regulatory consultant.

I work exclusively with start-up, emerging, and established food brands across Australia, helping them navigate nutrition science, food regulation, and health claims with confidence.

With over a decade of experience across academic research, the food industry, and consulting, I bring an end-to-end understanding of how evidence moves from journals, to guidelines, to food labels, claims, and policy submissions. I help brands assess whether claims are feasible before launch, interpret and apply the Food Standards Code correctly, build evidence dossiers that meet regulatory expectations, and support policy and guideline review processes.

My role is not just marketing. It’s risk reduction, credibility, and evidence-led decision-making – helping food companies avoid costly reprints, reformulations, and regulatory setbacks by getting it right the first time.

NPR Consulting exists to close the gap between science and regulation. I don’t believe food regulation should be confusing. I believe it should be understood, anticipated, and used strategically.
