This fact sheet synthesised the contemporary evidence base on legumes and health outcomes, translating complex epidemiological and intervention research into an accessible resource for health professionals.
To review and summarise the totality of evidence linking legume consumption with chronic disease prevention, metabolic health, gastrointestinal function, reproductive outcomes and mortality, and to align messaging with the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
Legumes are uniquely positioned within the Australian Dietary Guidelines, being included in both:
– The vegetables and legumes/beans group; and
– The lean meats and alternatives group
Despite this, consumption remains low. Australians consume an average of 2.9kg of legumes per year compared to a global average of 5kg. Median intake is just 4g per day, with 44% of Australians reporting no legume consumption and only 28% consuming them regularly.
A diet low in legumes is identified as one of the leading dietary risk factors contributing to Australia’s overall disease burden.
This project aimed to provide health professionals with a robust, defensible evidence summary to support dietary counselling and public health messaging.
The fact sheet synthesised observational and interventional research across multiple health domains.
Cardiovascular and metabolic health
Legume consumption is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk, improved lipid profiles, reduced inflammatory markers and improved glycaemic control. Eating as little as 50g (¼ cup) per day has been linked to reductions in coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality.
Diabetes and weight management
Legume-rich dietary patterns are linked with lower BMI, reduced obesity prevalence and improved HbA1c and fasting glucose outcomes.
Gastrointestinal health
Due to their fibre and phytochemical content, legumes support gut microbiota diversity and short-chain fatty acid production, contributing to reduced chronic disease risk.
Cancer risk reduction
Legumes, particularly when replacing red and processed meats, are associated with reduced colorectal cancer risk.
Bone, reproductive and mental health
Plant-based dietary patterns rich in legumes are linked with improved bone mineral density, reduced hip fracture risk, favourable pregnancy outcomes and reduced depressive symptoms.
The evidence was presented within whole-diet frameworks such as Mediterranean and DASH dietary patterns, reinforcing the importance of dietary substitution rather than simple addition.
The final resource was developed to:
– Support confident clinical recommendation of legumes
– Address common consumption barriers (family resistance, preparation knowledge, cooking perceptions)
– Highlight environmental and sustainability benefits
– Emphasise legumes as a cost-effective protein source with public health savings potential
By synthesising a broad evidence base into clear, structured messaging, this project strengthened the scientific foundation for increasing legume intake across Australian dietary patterns.
