What to eat when pregnant to nourish your baby

Cushii x Dr Courtney (Thompson) Stewart

Dr Courtney (Thompson) Stewart partnered with Australian baby brand Cushii to develop a science-based pre-natal nutrition guide designed to support women during pregnancy. The article provided practical, evidence-informed guidance on key food groups to prioritise, shifting the focus away from restriction and toward nourishment.

The guide outlined four core dietary pillars for pregnancy: folate-rich leafy greens and wholegrains to support neural tube development; iron- and protein-rich foods such as meat, chicken, legumes and beans to support red blood cell formation and foetal growth; calcium-rich dairy (or appropriately fortified plant-based alternatives) for skeletal development; and omega-3- and iodine-containing fish to support brain, nerve and visual development.

Importantly, the piece emphasised tailored nutrition, bioavailability considerations (such as pairing plant-based iron sources with vitamin C), and nutrient density – while also acknowledging the realities of pregnancy including nausea, fatigue and cravings. The feature included a practical, nutrient-focused recipe developed by Courtney to help women easily implement these recommendations.

This collaboration demonstrates Courtney’s ability to translate evidence-based nutrition into accessible, consumer-friendly education while maintaining scientific integrity and alignment with Australian dietary guidance.
